… to add value to crude oil refining in Africa

The world’s largest crude distillation column equipment designed for crude oil processing for Dangote refinery on Sunday arrives Lagos.

The Crude Distillation Column is the largest in terms of distilling capacity which is 650 thousand barrels per stream day. Presently, this is the world’s largest single train refining Column.

The significant equipment  weighs 2250MT; Length, 112.5m; Width, 14.036m; and Height, 13.752m;

The above mentioned weight does not include the weight of the internal trays which is approx. 536 MT.

Capt Rajen Sachar, Head, Maritime and Ports Infrastructure of Dangote told the newsmen during the arrival of the facility in Lagos that the equipment  is the biggest single-train facility used for refining crude

The refinery equipment which was manufactured by Sinopec in China is the primary unit processor of crude oil into fuels.

Sachar  said the crude oil consists of various chemical components that have different molecular sizes, molecular weights and boiling temperatures.

He added that the crude distillation column works on the principle of fractional distillation leading to separation of various components in the mixture on the basis of their different boiling points.

According to him, “ Crude oil enters the top of the column, where the inlet temperature is 165 deg C gradually increasing to 357 deg C at the bottom of the column.

“During this passage the crude and its vapours pass through a complex web of internal trays to increase the contact time and surface area within the column with the hot vapours travelling upwards through bubble caps which allow the vapour to pass through the tray with the cooler liquid flowing downward the column.

“When the vapour reaches the height within the column where its boiling point is equal to the temperature of the column at that height it condenses to form a liquid.

“The liquid then collects on various trays in the column at differing heights from where it is extracted out of the column.

“It is therefore critical to control the heat load of the column to optimize the crude crack.

“These separated fractions are mainly middle distillates namely, Naphtha, Jet Fuel, Kerosene, Gasoline and Gas Oil,” Sachar added.

The company’s captain said that the refinery when completed will produce Euro-V quality gasoline and diesel, as well as jet fuel and polypropylene.

He said that the crude column will enhance the economy of Nigeria and all neighbouring countries in Africa by making available refined petroleum products meeting world standards emission norms of Euro 5 and Euro 6.

The captain said the strategic location of Nigeria in West Africa continent will help in reducing the transportation costs of these fuels to other countries in the African subcontinent.

“Thereby providing cost effective high grade petroleum products to them.

“This Refinery with a capacity of 650 kbpsd is higher than the total demand of Nigeria

“Thus catapulting Nigeria position from net importer of petroleum products to a net exporter of petroleum products. Thereby redefining Nigeria’s position in the global petroleum product market.

He said that the equipment was capable of refining 650,000 barrel per day (bpd) which he said  the refinery was designed to be Africa’s largest, with potential to transform the country from an importer of fuel to a net exporter.

He said that the technology is significant to Nigeria and Dangote refinery, because “ this is the largest crude oil processor in the world”.

According to him, this technology will bring multiplier effect positive to the company and Nigeria through supply to huge market.

Sachar said that the project is also expected to generate over 9,500 direct and 25,000 indirect jobs.

“The Crude Distillation Column is the largest in terms of distilling capacity which is 650 thousand barrels per stream day.

“Presently, this is the world’s largest single train refining Column.

“The dimension of this equipment has a weight of 2250 metric tonnes,112.5 meters length,  14.036 meters width and 13.752 meters height, he said.

Sachar said: It is the largest diameter, longest length and the heaviest single-unit equipment in domestic export equipment.

“ It will be installed in the world’s largest single-series refinery – the 32.5 million tonne/year Dangote refinery in Nigeria.

He said that crude oil processor took 14 months in construction by Sinopec company in China and eight weeks to bring it down to Nigeria.

“ We decided to ship it through vessel from China to avoid been damage and also to avoid traffic congestion if using roads from Apapa.

“ Dangote refinery also invested heavily in dredging to sea from refinery to Apapa for easy passage of the vessel.

He said that the President of the company, Alhaji Aliko Dangote is passionate about technology transfer to Nigerians, adding that he has given standing instruction to train seven Nigerians be a ship Captain

Sachar said Dangote Oil Refinery Company is currently training about 150 young Nigerian engineers in refinery operations in preparation for the take-off of its Lagos refinery and petrochemical plant in Indian.

He said engineers were currently undergoing training  Mumbai, India.

He said the training programme was a continuum as more engineers would be trained to work effectively in the fertilizer plant and refinery being built by the company.

In his remarks, Mr Lawal Fagbo Saheed, Pilot Grade 1 of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) commended the vessel crew who brougth it from China, adding that it took seven hours to drive the vessel from Apapa to Dangote due to the heavy equipments.

According to Saheed, “ It took an experienced and patient pilot to move the vessel to the final destination due to sea waves.

“ We are happy today that am also part of progress and am proud to be associated with such landmark achievement.

The Imperatives In Fadahunsi’s Bill for Orthopedic Hospital By Soji Ikotun

Published

on

Fadahunsi

Life, according to an old adage, has no duplicate. Another view says, health is wealth, while some doctrines claim that fitness is divinity. In all, we are on same trail where unarguably, good health comes with its willpower.
To average Nigerians, discussing issues that bother on health, are unequivocally align with efforts a government may put in place to mitigate the plights citizens were made through at getting quality health care delivery.
Passionate by the need to establish a Federal Orthopedic Hospital in Osun East Senatorial district, Senator Fadahunsi, Francis Adenigba, “Fada” as fondly called, laid on table, legislation to drive home the dream of a functional Orthopedic clinic in Ilesa, Osun State on Tuesday, the 23rd of November, 2021 at the floor of the Nigerian Senate.
The Clerk of the Senate, Ibrahim El-Ladan read the presentation of Federal Orthopedic Hospital, Ilesha, Osun State (Establishment) Bill, 2021 (SB 855) for first reading. If this Bills scale through, this will be another milestone towards alleviating the agony of accessing a quality healthcare for the good people of Ijeshaland, Osun East Senatorial district and Osun State at large.
The fallout of this is that, the people will have the first class medical attention when it comes to orthopedic diagnoses, as a branch of medicine that deals with correction of bone and muscle deformity. This hospital will perform range of other techniques from arthroscopy to muscle and tendon repair to corrective surgery for anatomical malalignment. Theoretically, orthopedic specialty hospitals offer multiple advantages compared with general medical practices.
Senator Fadahunsi, taking the bull by the horn, identified the necessity of such a huge investment of government to cushion the inaccessibility of orthopedic facilities in the area. Ilesa an ancient town as we all know, a densely populated city, is in dire need of adept surgeons and hospital to diagnosis, treat, rehabilitate, prevent injuries and diseases of the body’s musculoskeletal system.
The speedy passage of this Bill and assent by the President will be a further indication that the present administration is attentive to the wellbeing of the people and it will go a long way to complement services of orthopedists in limited public and private specialist hospitals in the State, who cannot fully meet the demand of patients with skeletal deformities.
Of recent, the menace of these “Okada” riders, auto crashes even domestic injuries and muscular weakness, cases of broken bones, compression fractures, stress fractures, dislocations, muscle injury and tendon tears or ruptures are common reasons people visit orthopedic doctors. When these services are out of reach, people suffer severe pain in their sick beds, the purpose of quality health care delivery is defeated. It is therefore commendable and timing having a Bill in this direction.
Senator Fadahunsi, a consummate lawmaker and ex-Customs chief with track records of immeasurable accomplishments had played an eloquent role, digging in the necessities of having a specialized health care center in the heart of Ijesaland, the Federal Orthopedic Hospital, Ilesa, Osun State.
With Fadahunsi’s experiences and as a lobbyist which is one major characteristic of a prudent parliamentarian, he knows the capacities of the Co-sponsors at ensuring easy passage of this significant Bill, to navigate all the procedures of legislations and presidential assent by the grace of God.
The Senator Fadahunsi, Francis Adenigba 29 months’ exploits in the Senate has drawn quite impressive achievements to the Constituents in all ramifications of governance and this is noteworthy. Fadahunsi, a well-informed, intellectually resourceful reformist, he is well equipped to achieve desired results at all times.
So far, he has in Ife central and Atakumosa East local governments built blocks of classrooms for students at several schools. Solar powered boreholes were also provided in 8 out of the 10 Local governments areas of the Senatorial District while others are under construction.
When his attention was drawn to the epileptic power supply and total outage of at Ife North, Senator Fadahunsi supplied and installed new transformers while that of Idasa’ base in Ilesa is fully functional. Ward 7 and 8 of Atakumosa East Local government have been connected to the National grid and as we speak, the problems of electricity in those two wards is now an history.
In the area of empowerment and youth emancipation, Senator Francis Fadahunsi facilitated training of over 1300 women and youths, start-up grants were awarded for various trades.
These training which include Tailoring, Shoe making, Vulcanizing, Hair dressing, Furniture/Carpentry, Barbing, Soap making and many others are still ongoing and the scopes were enlarge to accommodate larger number of participants and other interested individuals in the Senatorial districts
It is also worthy of note that apart from not failing in making available various requests for cash gifts, Senator Francis Fadahunsi had sponsored about 308 youths in specialized vocations, they are all doing vibrantly well in their various fields as we speak.
He facilitated minimum of 2.2M loan for 55 party members in the Senatorial district. This to any responsible person the needed empowerment that can create jobs for the beneficiaries and participants in turn will become employers of labour.
In lawmaking, Senator Fadahunsi is not a push-over, since his assumption of office in the Upper Chamber, he has raised several bills and motions on the floor of the Senate.
In drawing Federal attention to the Constituency, Fadahunsi were able to lobby the Minister of Work, Babatunde Fashola in the construction, rehabilitation of some deplorable roads, the Ipetu-Ijesa-Ile-Oluji axis road, about 451m project and so many others.
Taking about employment opportunities to the Constituents, Fadahunsi has been in the front burner, youths in the district were recruited into the University College Hospital, UCH, Ibadan, also at the Nigerian Correctional Centre, NCS, Trade Negotiation Office, the Federal Inland Revenue Service, FIRS and the Nigerian Hajj commission, these are pensionable employments, so admirable.
As part of his succour to the people during the Covid-19 pandemic, Senator Fadahunsi did direct transfer of total sums of N50m to the electorate across the ten local governments, this was at the period of the lockdown, he also evidently distributed food items to individuals and communities.
He has constructed various projects personally handled, one of which is the popular Town hall in Ilesa West local government, classrooms for schools and reading equipment. Senator Fadahunsi donated two brand new Hiace buses, 11 seaters and 15 seaters, worth N18m to the Osun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, the PDP which is a rare feat since coming to power of this present administration.
In all of these, what the lawmaker require of us is a total support and prayers to partner his desire to bring the people out of the wood.

DIRECT PRIMARY: Buhari Under Pressure As Pro, Anti-Tinubu Forces Dig In

Published

on

Buhari

Two different camps within the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC were at the weekend mounting pressure on President Muhammadu Buhari to take their position on the amended Electoral Act Amendment Bill.
The pressure on Buhari according to multiple sources is majorly on the contentious provision in the amended Electoral Act that provides for direct primaries in the selection of party candidates for elections.
It was gathered that majority of the governors are against the provision as they feel that it denies them the godfather role of dictating candidates from their states for election. However, supporters of the 2023 presidential aspiration of National Party leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu were on their part lobbying the president to assent the bill given what they claim as his advantage using the option.
Tinubu is reported to have been able to get the advantage in vote rich states like Lagos, Kano, Borno and Katsina which return the majority of votes in direct primaries.
The addition of Katsina to the vote rich states for Tinubu came after it emerged that the wife of the deputy governor of the state, Hajiya Mariya Buhari was appointed as national woman leader of the Tinubu Support Organisation, TSO.
Tinubu is also believed to have consolidated himself among APC members in many states controlled by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP with Akwa Ibom, Delta among such states in the South-South.
The face of the campaign for the use of direct primaries is Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila of the House of Representatives. Gbajabiamila a scion of the Tinubu camp, was one of the first senior political leaders to meet with President Buhari once he returned from his 16-day trip out of the country last week.
The Speaker who went on a mission to lobby the president on the issue came out saying that the president was supportive of direct primaries.
The pro-direct primaries camp being conscious of the leverage that the governors have in mobilizing delegates believe that the only way that they can overcome the hurdle is by going direct to the people using direct primaries to elect party candidates.
”There is no way Tinubu can become APC presidential candidate with the Malami group and the governors opposed to him if indirect primaries are used,” a source privy to the unfolding developments mentioned.
”The cabal knows that there is no one with the kind of name recognition or network in the country who can match Tinubu in a direct primary and that is why they are stonewalling on the issue,” the source said.
It was gathered that it was part of their strategy to lessen the momentum of Tinubu that they have been stonewalling on the national convention of the party. The opposition to Tinubu in the Tinubu camp as represented by the governors of Yobe, Kebbi and Jigawa, respectively, Mai Mala Buni, Senator Atiku Bagudu and Mohammed Abubakar.
The three governors after a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari last Monday announced that the party’s convention will hold next February and by that extend the time that Buni has held on as caretaker committee chairman of the party.
In that period the governors working with the cabal are expected to push proposals that would further diminish the leverage Tinubu has.
Meanwhile, President Buhari is said to be walking between the devil and the deep blue sea on the matter of direct primaries as he could face a popular rebellion in the National Assembly over the matter.
Besides the strong support for Tinubu from Speaker Gbajabiamila and Senate President Ahmad Lawan, the majority of National Assembly members are also craving for direct primaries.
The lawmakers believe that it is the only way that they can be liberated from the apron strings of their governors who dictate candidates list when indirect methods are used for primaries.
”If the president refuses to sign the lawmakers are ready to override the veto for their self-preservation,” one source said.
Besides, there are also some regional champions who are also said to be pushing the agenda that the use of direct primaries would give the North an advantage in the selection of presidential candidates on the basis of the alleged superiority of the region in population.
Reports indicate that the National Assembly in passing the Electoral Act Amendment Bill, had provided that the selection of candidates should be by direct primaries. The extant Electoral Act on the other hand provides for the use of direct, indirect or consensus.
The shocker for the Anti-Tinubu forces came when on the last day of the consideration of the bill that Speaker Gbajabiamila during the Committee of the Whole with the deputy Speaker Idris Wase presiding as required by the rules of the House, moved the motion for the adoption of the compulsory use of direct primaries for selection of candidates.
The moment Gbajabiamila moved the motion, the majority of the House was forced to support it leading to the harmonization in the same direction with the Senate.
However, sources within the party say that Gbajabiamila was pandering to the interest of his political godfather who holds sway among the party grassroots.
It would be recalled that a major offensive to stop Tinubu came with the removal of  Adams Oshiomhole as national chairman of the party in 2020 following claims of the latter’s allegiance to Tinubu. Since then repeated efforts to elect a new executive has not materialized on account of the inability of the forces against Tinubu to drown him.
However, one activist in the anti-Tinubu camp was dismissive of the national leader’s advantage in a direct primary.
”After Lagos, Kano, Osun and maybe Borno where else is he strong? Mark me, Tinubu will not contest the APC presidential primary,” the source said.
