Gbenga Falope Jnr has over the years been able to warm up himself to the hearts of lovers of good music that is fast becoming a scarce commodity in today’s world. In this brief encounter, the unassuming musician shed light on his musical voyage…
Q: How would you introduce yourself to someone who is not familiar with you.
A: Laughs. well, I will first draw the person’s attention with the usual greeting. You know, the good morning, afternoon stuff, depending on what time of the day. So after that, I will say….laughs…I will say, this is Gbenga Falope Jnr . A musician and entertainer.
Q: So, if i may ask, for the purpose of this encounter. Where is Falope from, what his growing up like.
A: Cool. I was born in the late sixties into a Christian family of Ijesa parents in Surulere, Lagos.
My growing up was a very strict one because my Mom happened to be a teacher then and She retired as an Head teacher in 1989 after serving Government for the Mandatory 35 yrs.
Q; Which part of the country did you really have reallyyour formative years.
A :I grew up in the South Western part of Nigeria…Lagos, Ile-Ife, Odogbolu, in order of importance so to say.
Q; How did you come about music
A; .I got into Music through my Mom who introduced me to the Boys’ Brigade of Nigeria where I ended up Training as a Trumpeter..
Then, as a Member of the Celestial Church of Christ, Moore Cathedral in Ife, I was able, through the Grace and Mercy of God, to play the Guitar and other Musical Instruments.
I eventually got more into playing the Saxophone as a student of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering in OAU through the Music Department.
I performed with several bands then in OAU amongst which we have the AMUS Band which later became the OAU band, the TIME band, Jahbless Omoluabi Reggae Band, Chief Jimi Solanke’s Band.
Some friends and I, Popoola Isaac, Engr Akin Ogunsumi, Soji Ajala, Kunle Babatola(Taproot) later formed The MAFIOSOS OF JAZZ Band in 1988.
The Present COOL BREEZERS Band of Dr Gbenga Falope Jnr was formed in 1991.
Q: Wow! You have really moved around in the industry and in the process garnering experience. So, Where and when did you start music professionally
A: If it’s about the Music Industry, it will probably date back to the early 80s..but my Present Band was formed in April, 1991.
Q: Considering your vast experience in the music trade, Who and who can you say you admired musically and can be said to have been your model kind of.
A: Actually I have quite a number of influencers. Those I can call role models. Among them, my Mother, MC F.O. Falope(JP), King Sunny Ade, Chief Jimi Solanke,Brig.Gen. Atofarati (Rtd.)
Q: Are you satisfied with current state of the industry where you are an active operator.
A: Well…we are not doing badly.
Q; How many Albums hava you mention few of them and their years?
A; *THANKSGIVING- 1996.
* ELEVATION -2003.
* LEVEL 1- 2006
* CORNERSTONE- 2009.
*NO MORE SORROW- 2016.
Q; What can you say about PMAN and you role with them in the past and now?
A; PMAN is the Greatest Union of Musicians in Africa, unfortunately, leadership crisis has not allowed it’s members to reap benefits of the Union.
I happen to be the Immediate Past President (IPP).
I hope the different factions can come together, form a peace Committee and go for an Election ASAP.
Q; Like how many musician have you worked with and which of them do you like most before you became one of them too?
A; A lot and I love them All.
Q; What do we expect from you very soon?
A; Expect the Best soon..
Q; Where do you see yourself in the next few years from now?
A; With the Grace of God, the Best with Peace of Mind ruling the waves and churning out Evergreen music.
Q; Lastly marriage how are u copping?
A; I’m Peacefully married to Abimbola and Blessed with lovely kids
